What is Form 1098-E?

Form 1098-E reports $600 or more of interest received on qualified student loans during the year.

Borrowers may use the information on Form 1098-E to claim a deduction for student loan interest, subject to income limits and other eligibility rules.

Who needs to file Form 1098-E?

  • Financial institutions, government agencies, and educational institutions that receive $600 or more in interest payments on qualified student loans during the year.
  • If multiple parties are connected to the same loan, the first party to receive the interest payment in the ordinary course of business is generally the one required to file Form 1098-E.

What's New for Tax Year 2026

Form 1098-E and its instructions continue to allow truncated taxpayer identification numbers on recipient statements to help protect borrower privacy.

Filers may use Form W-9S or equivalent electronic processes to obtain or confirm borrower identifying information needed to prepare accurate Forms 1098-E.
