What is Form 1099-INT?

Form 1099-INT is an IRS document used to report interest income.

  • It's issued by banks, financial institutions, and other entities that pay interest.
  • All taxable and tax-exempt interest income must be reported on your tax return.

Who needs to file Form 1099-INT?

  • Any payer that paid $10 or more of reportable interest to a person during the tax year files Form 1099-INT. That is not limited to banks and brokerages: a business, a government entity, or a nominee or middleman receiving interest on behalf of someone else can all have a filing obligation.
  • For 2026 a separate $2,000 threshold applies to certain interest paid in the course of your trade or business rather than on a deposit account. That figure was $600 before 2026 and is adjusted for inflation each year, so check the current instructions for the year you are filing.
  • You also file whenever you withheld federal income tax under the backup withholding rules, however small the interest was, and when you withheld and paid foreign tax on interest.
  • The form includes a breakdown of all types of interest income and related expenses.

Banks, credit unions, brokerages, businesses, government entities and other payers that paid $10 or more of amounts reportable in boxes 1, 3 or 8 to a person during 2026. Filing a 1099-INT is not limited to financial institutions. A separate $2,000 threshold applies to certain interest paid in the course of your trade or business rather than on a deposit account — that figure was $600 before 2026 and is adjusted for inflation each year. You also file whenever you withheld federal income tax under backup withholding, no matter how small the interest was, and when you withheld and paid foreign tax on interest.

Yes. Tax-exempt interest is reported in box 8 and any private activity bond interest in box 9. It is not taxable to the recipient at the federal level, but it still has to be reported.

Backup withholding may apply when a payee fails to furnish a TIN in the required manner, after certain IRS incorrect-TIN notices, or when the IRS notifies you that the payee is subject to backup withholding because of underreported interest or dividends. The rate is 24% and the amount withheld goes in box 4. Each trigger has its own timing rules, so check the current IRS rules rather than withholding on the next payment automatically. TIN Matching can identify a name/TIN mismatch before you file — we offer it as a $0.49 add-on — but it does not replace the required payee certifications or the backup-withholding rules.

Generally no. Corporations are exempt recipients for interest reporting, along with tax-exempt organizations, IRAs, and government units. Keep a Form W-9 on file showing the exemption.

Recipient copies are due February 1, 2027. The IRS copy is due March 1, 2027 on paper and March 31, 2027 if you e-file. Because TaxFormHero files electronically you get the later IRS date, and we timestamp every submission so you have proof of filing. The February 1 date is not arbitrary: January 31, 2027 falls on a Sunday, and the IRS General Instructions for Certain Information Returns say, "If the regular due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday in the District of Columbia or where the return is to be filed, file by the next business day."

If you file 10 or more information returns of any kind in the year, the IRS requires all of them to be filed electronically. That count is aggregated across every form type you file — ten 1099s and one W-2 puts you over the line. TaxFormHero is an IRS-authorized e-filing platform, so filing here satisfies the mandate.

$1.99 per form at the entry tier, dropping to $0.45 per form at volume, with no signup fee and no subscription. You only pay when you transmit. State filing, print & mail, e-delivery, and TIN matching are optional add-ons priced separately.

Yes. Open the form in your dashboard, tick Corrected, fix the figures, and transmit again — we submit it to the IRS as a correction and generate a fresh recipient copy. There is no separate charge for filing a correction to a form you originally filed with us.

The IRS charges a per-form penalty that increases the longer you wait, and it rises again if the failure is judged intentional. Penalties apply separately to the IRS copy and the recipient copy, so a single late form can be charged twice. Filing accurate returns and furnishing recipient statements by the applicable deadlines is what avoids both.

Deadline for Filing Form 1099-INT (Tax Year 2026)

Recipient copy February 1, 2027
Paper to IRS March 1, 2027
E-file to IRS March 31, 2027

Filing 10 or more information returns in aggregate means e-filing is required, so the e-file date is the one that applies to most filers.
