Form 1099-DA is used by brokers to report proceeds from sales, exchanges, or other dispositions of digital assets such as cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, nonfungible tokens (NFTs), and tokenized assets.
The form reports gross proceeds for each digital asset transaction and, for covered digital assets, may also report cost basis and related adjustments.
Mandatory reporting of gross proceeds applies to all reportable digital asset dispositions, with cost-basis reporting required for covered digital assets and optional for noncovered digital assets.
Form 1099-DA includes dedicated boxes for digital asset identifiers, number of units, proceeds, cost or other basis, market discount, and wash-sale loss disallowance, aligning digital asset reporting more closely with traditional securities reporting.
