The best 1099 e-filing service for 2027 is the one that transmits through IRIS, covers the forms and states you need, furnishes recipient copies, and keeps your total cost per form low. Star ratings do not tell you that. This guide gives you the criteria, a worked cost example, and a fair look at where each type of option fits, including ours.
Filing one yourself? You can e-file Form 1099-NEC online with TaxFormHero, an IRS-authorized e-filing platform.
Two changes shape this comparison.
First, the system. According to IRS Publication 1099, IRIS will be the only electronic intake system for information returns after January 1, 2027. FIRE will no longer accept current-year, prior-year or correction submissions. A vendor that was “IRS-authorized” under FIRE is not automatically ready. The useful question is whether its current workflow transmits through IRIS and returns an acceptance record.
Second, the reporting threshold. Per the December 2026 IRS instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC, the general threshold for qualifying nonemployee services and many specified payments is $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025. It may be adjusted for inflation starting in calendar year 2027. It is not universal: royalties keep a $10 threshold, and attorney reporting depends on whether the payment is for services or gross proceeds. Software cannot classify a payment for you. It reports what you enter.
The same instructions note that January 31, 2027 falls on a Sunday, so the practical Form 1099-NEC due date moves to February 1, 2027. Many other 1099 forms have a later electronic deadline. Check each form’s date in the IRS tax calendar instead of applying one date to all.
For a deeper walkthrough of the transition, see our IRIS 1099 filing guide and our overview of tax year 2026 changes.

Not always. Answer three questions first.
Per IRS guidance, the free IRIS Taxpayer Portal lets you create returns by entering data or uploading a CSV file. It also supports basic validation, downloading and printing recipient copies, retaining filing records, automatic-extension requests, and up to 100 forms per submission. For a small business with a few contractors, that may be adequate.
It gets harder when you have thousands of records, many payer accounts, staff permissions, W-9 collection, or clients who expect delivery on your behalf. IRIS A2A uses XML and is intended for bulk filing through specialized software or a third-party provider. That is where paid services earn their fee.

An independent July 2026 provider-selection guide lists the practical criteria: current IRIS support, forms covered, state filing, recipient delivery, corrections, acceptance evidence, security, pricing and support. A failure in any one can leave a filing incomplete. Use this checklist on every vendor, including us.
| Criterion | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| IRIS transmission | Does the workflow file through IRIS? Can I download the acceptance record? | FIRE is gone after January 1, 2027. |
| Forms covered | 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K, W-2, ACA, 1098 and others? | One vendor for every return avoids duplicate data entry. |
| State filing | Which states? Is it direct or combined federal/state? Is there a fee? | State penalties are separate from federal ones. |
| Recipient delivery | Encrypted e-delivery, with consent handled? Print and mail? Records kept? | Furnishing is a separate duty from filing. |
| TIN verification | Can I check TINs before filing, and at what cost? | Bad TINs drive notices and rejects. |
| Import | Excel or CSV import? Any record cap? | Matters for firms with thousands of rows. |
| Corrections | Are corrections free or charged? | Corrections are common and must also be e-filed if the originals had to be. |
| Multi-payer tools | Multiple payer accounts, permissions, audit trail? | Decisive for CPA and bookkeeping firms. |
| Security | Encryption, independent attestation? | You hold recipients’ TINs. |
| Total cost | Federal + state + delivery + TIN + corrections | The headline per-form price is only one line. |
Before you compare anything, build a simple inventory: payer, recipient, form, box, amount, state, W-9 status and filing status. The same guide recommends this, and it makes every quote comparable.
The field is crowded. Many providers rank for this search, including Tax1099, 1099Online, TaxBandits, efile4Biz, WageFiling, Track1099, 1099Pro and TaxZerone. We do not rate them individually here, because prices, features and IRIS readiness change, and you should check each one’s current pages. Instead, here is how the options group.
| Option | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| IRS IRIS Taxpayer Portal (free) | Under 100 forms per submission, simple needs | No recipient delivery service, no bulk XML workflow, you manage everything. |
| Per-form filing services | Small businesses, bookkeepers and CPAs with variable volume | Add-on fees that raise the real cost. |
| Subscription or tiered-plan platforms | Steady, high volume with many features | Paying for features you do not use in a slow year. |
| Payroll or accounting suites with built-in 1099 filing | Businesses already running payroll in one system | Limited form coverage or state support. |
| Enterprise or API workflows | Credit unions, mortgage companies, brokers, retirement funds | Setup time and integration work. |
A vendor guide from a firm selling automation tools says firms filing fewer than 500 forms tend to benefit most from per-form filing services. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a law. Your own volume and add-on mix decide it.
TaxFormHero is an IRS-authorized information-return e-filing platform. It is built for businesses, accountants, bookkeepers and CPA firms. Federal returns go to the IRS through IRIS A2A.
What the platform covers:
There is no subscription, no signup fee and no annual contract. You pay per form.
For 1099 forms, pricing is graduated:
| Forms in your order | Price per form |
|---|---|
| 1 to 150 | $1.99 |
| 151 to 500 | $0.99 |
| 501 to 1,000 | $0.60 |
| Above 1,000 | $0.45 |
Each rate applies only to the forms inside its tier. W-2, W-2c, 1095-B and 1095-C filing begins at $2.99 per form for the first 50 forms, with lower rates at higher volumes.
Optional services, per form: state filing $0.99, print and mail $1.69, encrypted e-delivery $0.19, and TIN matching $0.49 per verification. Full details are on the pricing page.
Headline rates mislead, so run your own numbers the same way for every vendor. Here is how we calculate ours.
Order A: 200 Forms 1099-NEC, federal only.
Order A with add-ons: state filing, TIN matching and e-delivery on all 200 forms.
If some of your states are Combined Federal/State Filing states, the state line drops for those forms. If you mail paper copies instead of e-delivery, replace the $0.19 line with $1.69 per form.
Order B: 1,200 forms, federal only.
Notice what the example shows. Add-ons can cost more than the federal filing itself on small orders. A service with a low base price and expensive delivery or TIN checks can end up costing more than one with a higher base. Ask each vendor for a quote on the exact order you expect, including corrections.
If you have fewer than 10 information returns in total, e-filing is not required. If you do have 10 or more, the free portal may cover you. Choose a paid service if you want TIN checks, state filing handled for you, and recipient copies delivered without extra steps. Our small business 1099 software guide goes through that decision.
The free portal’s 100-form limit and single-taxpayer design become friction fast. Look for multiple payer accounts, Excel import, a clear status for each client, and encrypted delivery. Our enterprise information return filing page covers high-volume needs.
These filers often handle forms beyond 1099-NEC, such as 1099-K, 1098 and 1099-R, in large batches. Check form coverage first, then import limits, then security documentation. We cover the lender side in our 1098 e-file guide.
A single platform for 1099, W-2 and ACA forms keeps payer and recipient data in one place. Note that the IRS directs Form W-2 e-filing to the Social Security Administration, so confirm exactly how a provider handles W-2 transmission. See the IRS page on e-filing information returns.
We built TaxFormHero around one belief: a filing service should make the whole obligation easier, not only the upload. The IRS transmission is one step. Before it come accurate payer and recipient data and a collected W-9. After it come recipient copies, state returns and corrections.
That is why TIN matching, W-9 collection, e-delivery and state filing sit in the same account as the federal return. It is also why we price per form with no subscription. A small payer in a quiet year should not carry a plan fee, and a firm filing thousands should see its rate fall.
Our advice, even if you never use us: do not choose on a rating or the lowest advertised rate. Choose on IRIS support and acceptance records, then on total cost for your real order. Run the same sample order through every vendor you consider. If the free IRS portal covers your volume, use it. If it does not, you will know exactly what you are paying for.

An IRS acceptance message does not prove you furnished recipient copies. Make sure the vendor shows delivery status separately.
If you want to see a 1099-NEC order priced and filed with IRIS transmission, TIN checks and recipient delivery in one place, start on our 1099-NEC page. For W-2 and ACA returns, use the TaxFormHero home page. There is no signup fee, and you pay only for the forms you file.
There is no single best service, and the IRS does not endorse a commercial provider. The best fit supports IRIS, covers your forms and states, delivers recipient copies, and has a total cost that works for your volume. Compare two or three vendors on the same sample order.
You can use the free IRS IRIS Taxpayer Portal, a commercial IRIS-connected filing service, or a payroll or accounting suite with 1099 support. The portal takes up to 100 forms per submission. Bulk filers usually need a provider that uses IRIS A2A.
For payments made after December 31, 2025, the general threshold for nonemployee compensation and many other payments is $2,000, and it may be adjusted for inflation beginning in 2027. Royalties still use a $10 threshold, and attorney payments depend on their type. Check the IRS instructions for your payment category.
E-filing is generally required when you file 10 or more information returns in total. Form 1099-NEC is due January 31, which moves to February 1, 2027 because of the weekend. Other 1099 forms have different electronic deadlines, so check each form in the IRS calendar.
