The best 1099 e-file platform for 2027 is the one that matches your volume, your workflow and your tolerance for manual work. For a handful of forms, the IRS’s free portal may be enough. For recurring or high-volume filing, a pay-per-form platform such as TaxFormHero usually fits better. This guide compares seven options on the criteria that decide the choice, and explains what “IRS-approved” does and does not guarantee.
If you would rather not do this on paper, e-file Form 1099-NEC online with TaxFormHero instead.
No 1099 platform is “approved” in the sense of being endorsed. IRS Publication 3112 defines an Authorized IRS e-file Provider as a business that applied to take part in IRS e-file, met eligibility requirements, passed an IRS suitability check and was assigned an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN). The same publication says this status concerns participation in e-file and is not an endorsement of the provider’s product or advice.
The suitability check can cover tax compliance, past noncompliance with e-file rules and criminal background information for the firm and its listed principals or responsible officials. That is a real screen. It tells you the company is a known, vetted participant. It does not tell you the software is easy, accurate or fairly priced.
The IRS makes the same point on its list of business providers. Companies there are authorized Modernized e-File business providers with valid software identification numbers, but the IRS and the U.S. government do not endorse or warrant them. You can look up providers yourself with the IRS e-file provider search.
Treat authorization as the minimum entry requirement. Then choose on the criteria below.
Two changes shape this year’s choice.
FIRE is going away. The IRS says the FIRE system is retired for tax year 2026, and IRIS will be the only intake system for information returns starting in filing season 2027. A platform you use must therefore transmit through IRIS. TaxFormHero transmits federal returns to the IRS through IRIS A2A. If you want the setup steps, including the Transmitter Control Code (TCC), read our IRIS filing guide.
Electronic filing is mandatory at volume. Businesses filing 10 or more information returns in aggregate during a calendar year are required to file electronically. The count is across all information return types, not per form. A business with six 1099-NEC forms, three 1099-MISC forms and two W-2s has already crossed it.
Deadlines. Form 1099-NEC is due to recipients and the IRS on February 1, 2027, because January 31 falls on a Sunday. Most other electronic 1099 filings are due March 31, according to a 2027 deadline summary. Some forms have different dates, so confirm against the IRS instructions for your form. Our 1099 deadlines checklist lays out the calendar for small teams.

We judged each option on seven criteria that change your workload:
Pricing for providers changes by season and by plan, so confirm every figure on the provider’s own pricing page on the day you file. We show TaxFormHero’s prices in full below because we publish them.
| Option | Best for | Pricing model | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TaxFormHero | Small businesses, accountants, bookkeepers, CPA firms | Pay per form, graduated tiers, no subscription | Excel import, W-9 collection, TIN matching, 41+ states and D.C., IRIS A2A |
| IRS IRIS Taxpayer Portal | Low-volume payers who can key forms in themselves | Free | Direct from the IRS; no special software required |
| Tax1099 | Businesses that want a long-established dedicated filing service | Provider pricing page | Frequently recommended by bookkeepers in community threads |
| TaxBandits | Small businesses and tax professionals | Provider pricing page | Named in 2026 software roundups |
| Track1099 | Bookkeepers and small firms | Provider pricing page | Often cited by bookkeepers as easy to use |
| Yearli | Payroll-adjacent and mid-size filers | Provider pricing page | Named in 2026 software roundups |
| eFile4Biz | Price-sensitive small filers | Provider pricing page | Named in 2026 software roundups |
The competitor names above come from what practitioners and roundups most often mention, including a 2026 comparison of online 1099 software and a bookkeeper discussion thread. Features and prices for each should be confirmed on the provider’s site.
TaxFormHero is an IRS-authorized information-return platform for businesses, accountants, bookkeepers and CPA firms. It supports 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K and W-2, plus more than 20 other IRS information-return forms, including ACA forms.
What sets it apart:
For 1099 forms, the published rates are:
| Forms in the tier | Price per form |
|---|---|
| First 150 | $1.99 |
| 151 to 500 | $0.99 |
| 501 to 1,000 | $0.60 |
| Above 1,000 | $0.45 |
W-2, W-2c, 1095-B and 1095-C filing starts at $2.99 per form for the first 50 forms, with lower rates at higher volumes.
Optional services are priced per form: state filing is $0.99, print and mail is $1.69, encrypted e-delivery is $0.19, and TIN matching is $0.49 per verification. States in the Combined Federal/State Filing program carry no additional state-filing charge. Full details are on the pricing page.
Worked example. A firm files 600 1099 forms.
Add encrypted e-delivery to all 600 forms at $0.19 and the total rises by $114.00.
The IRS offers the IRIS Taxpayer Portal as a free online service for businesses of any size to e-file 1099-series information returns without special software. The IRS says it supports file creation or upload, corrections, extensions and recipient-copy downloads, plus validation alerts. A receipt confirmation may arrive in as little as 48 hours.
It is a legitimate choice, and for a payer with a few forms it is hard to beat on cost. The trade-offs are workflow ones. You work in the IRS interface, and you manage W-9 collection, TIN checks and recipient delivery separately. State filing and mailing are also yours to handle. For a business doing this once a year with few recipients, that is manageable. For an accounting firm with many payers, the time cost grows quickly.
Tax1099 is among the names that bookkeepers recommend most often in community threads, usually for ease of use. Roundups of 1099 software also list it. It suits businesses that want a dedicated, long-running filing service. Compare its per-form rates, plan tiers and add-on fees with your expected volume before committing.
TaxBandits appears in 2026 comparisons of online 1099 software and targets both small businesses and tax professionals. Check whether the plan you need includes bulk upload, multiple payers and state filing, because those features are what usually separate plan levels on filing platforms.
Bookkeepers often cite Track1099 as easy to use and cost effective. It is a common pick for small firms that file for a modest number of clients. Confirm current per-form pricing and how it handles state filing and mailing.
Yearli is named in 2026 roundups alongside the others. It is often considered by payroll-adjacent filers who also handle W-2 and ACA reporting. Check which forms are included in the base price and which require an add-on.
eFile4Biz is frequently mentioned in bookkeeper discussions for affordability. It suits price-sensitive filers with straightforward needs. As with the others, confirm IRIS support, TIN matching and state coverage before you rely on it.
You file fewer than ten forms and have no state obligations. Start with the free IRS portal. Our guide on e-filing 10 or more 1099s explains when the portal is enough and when a vendor saves time.
You are a small business with 10 to 150 recipients. A pay-per-form platform avoids paying for a subscription you use for two months. At TaxFormHero, 100 forms cost $199.00 before add-ons.
You are an accountant or bookkeeper. Prioritize multiple payer accounts, bulk import and a clean way to collect W-9 forms. Per-form pricing also makes it easy to pass costs through to each client.
You file hundreds or thousands of forms. Look at where tiers drop. Above 1,000 forms, TaxFormHero’s rate is $0.45 per form. Larger operations can also look at enterprise information return filing.

You have state obligations. Confirm each state’s requirements and whether the platform files directly. Our state filing guide covers the main pitfalls.
Also confirm that the form you need is covered. Choosing between forms can matter as much as choosing a platform, and our explainer on 1099-NEC versus 1099-MISC helps with that. For field-level help, see the box-by-box 1099-NEC guide.
We built TaxFormHero around one observation: most payers file once a year, and a subscription is a poor fit for that. Seasonal work should be priced seasonally. So we charge per form, with no signup fee and no annual contract.
We also think authorization is the floor, not the pitch. Every provider on a serious shortlist should be authorized, and the IRS says plainly that authorization is not an endorsement. What should separate providers is workflow: whether you can import a spreadsheet of thousands of recipients, verify TINs before you file, and send recipient copies without a second tool.
Graduated pricing is a deliberate choice. A tier should only apply to the forms inside it, so your tenth form never makes your first form more expensive. Look for that detail on any pricing page you read, ours included.
Finally, security should be checkable. Our SOC 2 Type I attestation is one piece of that. Ask any vendor what they can show you.

If you already know your volume, you can price your order on the TaxFormHero pricing page and see each add-on in dollars per form. You pay for the forms you file and the add-ons you choose. Nothing else.

For 1099-NEC specifically, start from the 1099-NEC filing page. For a walkthrough of the process first, see how TaxFormHero works. W-2 and ACA filing begin at $2.99 per form from the TaxFormHero home page.
The IRS publishes a page of approved e-file business providers and a provider search tool. Those listings confirm authorization, not quality. The IRS states that it does not endorse or warrant the companies listed.
Yes. The IRS’s IRIS Taxpayer Portal is free for businesses of any size filing 1099-series returns. It works well for small volumes. Businesses with many recipients often pay for a platform to save time on imports, TIN checks, state filing and delivery.
If you file 10 or more information returns in aggregate during the calendar year, the IRS requires electronic filing for the 2027 filing season. Below that, paper filing is still possible, but e-filing is simpler and gives you confirmation of receipt.
Form 1099-NEC is due February 1, 2027, since January 31 falls on a Sunday. Most other electronic 1099 filings are due March 31. Some forms follow different dates, so check the instructions for your specific form.
No. Add-ons for state filing, mailing, e-delivery and TIN matching change the total. Price your full order, including every add-on you will use, then compare totals instead of headline rates.
